In this book, the phenomenon of aromas and scents is systematically presented for the first time as part of human existence. The role of scents in various cultures is examined, including in the culture of the French Enlightenment and in Russian culture, particularly in Russian literature of the 19th and early 20th centuries. The attempts to penetrate the world of scents in the reasoning of Immanuel Kant and G.W.F. Hegel, Arthur Schopenhauer and Friedrich Nietzsche, Vasily Rozanov and Andrei Bely, Nikolai Berdyaev and Ivan Ilyin are explored. The author's analysis allows us to present the history of European culture in scents, to feel the aromas of the Silver Age culture, and to understand why in modern civilization natural scents are replaced by artificial ones. The book is intended for all those interested in the culture of everyday life.
