The history of armored forces in our country did not begin with tanks – at its origins stood armored cars. They appeared in the Russian army during the First World War – already in October 1914, the world's first armored unit went to the front.
To provide the army with this new type of combat vehicle, the Russian military department began both manufacturing armored vehicles at domestic enterprises and purchasing them abroad. The most successful for the Russian front were armored cars from the English company 'Austin' – between 1914 and 1917, 168 such vehicles were delivered to Russia, and another 50 were armored at the Putilov factory in Petrograd in 1919–1920.
'Austins' became the main and most mass type of armored car in Russia not only during the First World War but also during the Civil War, and they were used by all warring sides, with trophy vehicles subsequently serving in the armies of Poland, Germany, Romania, Estonia, Latvia, and Austria. In the Red Army, 'Austins' were used until 1931. These vehicles fought in Europe as part of the British Royal Tank Corps, and were also used by English units in Mesopotamia and India.
This book represents a complete history of the production, service, and combat use of armored vehicles of this type. It also tells the story of the 'Lenin' armored car – the only surviving example of the 'Austin' armored vehicle to this day.
