The study of one of the most famous and authoritative professionals in the field of the history of the architecture of the doctor of art history A. L. Punin is a unique generalizing work on the architectural and urban development of St. Petersburg of the middle and the second half of the XIX century. The author traces the complex processes of the style evolution of the architecture of the capital of the Russian Empire of the Eclectic Period in the context of the general historical development of Russia and its artistic culture.
In this book, which is the first part of the prepared three-volume edition and the covering period from the 1830s to the 1860s, the processes of transition from classicism to eclectics, as well as the style and design features of buildings and structures of the early eclectic period are considered. About a thousand illustrations are published in the book, including engravings, lithographs, watercolors, modern and historical inventory photos, as well as many archival drawings, first introduced into scientific turns.
