The manual presents the history of the emergence and improvement of construction gypsum and Portland cement. The fundamental difference between the hardening mechanism and the acquisition of the physical and technical properties of these astringent substances, which consists in the direct filling of the intercrystallite cavities with water, the clouding of the first astringent and chemical interaction of cement minerals with water through the stage formation in the interphesis zone, the development and decay of transitional activated complexes - the second. This difference makes it unacceptable to generalize the hardening schemes of the binder in question. The dynamics of a number of the supporting gypsum and Portland cement of the properties and phenomena that logically fit into the developed hydration models are given.
