In the history of the Russian Orthodox Church, Archbishop Luke (Voino-Yasenetsky) (1877-1961) stands out. He combined what seemed to be incompatible: he was an outstanding surgeon who saved people in three wars - the Russo-Japanese, Civil, and Great Patriotic Wars, leaving a scientific legacy whose value is recognized to this day - and he was an outstanding church figure, fearlessly defending Russian Orthodoxy and enduring the hardships of eleven years of wandering in prisons and exiles. And now, six decades after his passing, his memory lives on in both scientific and church circles. Museums and ongoing exhibitions have been opened, monuments and memorial plaques have been erected, awards and scholarships have been established, films and books dedicated to the physician V.F. Voino-Yasenetsky have been released. At the same time, St. Luke was first canonized among the locally venerated saints, and then, in 2000, he was canonized among the saints for universal veneration. Churches are being built in his name, icons and prayers are being written, and services are being held. This book is the work of a secular historian of religion who approaches the description and interpretation of the fate of the surgeon-bishop primarily from a scientific perspective, relying on various archival sources and documentary materials, drawing attention to the newly revealed circumstances of Archbishop Luke's life, and also revealing the content and twists of the Soviet state's religious policy in the 1920s-1960s.
