The author of the book is an art historian, art critic, and prose writer who has published numerous books and articles on Russian art of different eras. The author personally interacted with many of the heroes of this book - artists who are now considered living classics. These are remarkable masters who seek ways to transform traditional imagery rather than completely banish it. In the book, they are referred to by the paradoxical term 'archaists-innovators'. The author traces how these artists pick up the traditions of the 'poetic' realism of the 20th century and, more deeply, the sense of 'personal correctness' and inner freedom of the great painters of the 19th century. The book is addressed to all those interested in contemporary Russian culture.
