A well-known German scientist, author of many works on theology, and a professor at the University of Göttingen presented the history of the Arab Caliphate - once a vast and powerful empire. Emphasizing the inseparable connection between the political, religious, and administrative authority of the Arab Caliphate, the author analyzes the history of the emergence of Islam, its development, characteristics, and similarities with other major world religions. He tells about how rulers came to power and died, about the appointment and retirement of governors of important provinces, about whom the caliphs appointed each year to lead the Hajj pilgrimage, and how the conquest campaigns took place. In his research, Wellhausen relied on original sources - samples of the oldest Arabic historical literature, Kufic and Medinan traditions. Among the authors cited are such authorities as Abu Mikhnaf, al-Tabari, Ibn Ishaq, Abu Mashar, and al-Waqidi.
