The present book explores the prehistory and evolution of social violence, as well as the progressively refined mechanisms of cultural-psychological control over aggressive impulses. The hypothesis of the techno-humanitarian balance, its empirical foundations, consequences, and conclusions are discussed in detail. Comparative-historical calculations are provided to verify the hypothesis, demonstrating that in the long-term retrospective, with the growth of technological power and demographic density, the society's bloodshed coefficient (the ratio of the average number of killings per unit of time to the population size) did not increase but rather inconsistently decreased. It is shown that any technology poses a threat to society, but only until it is psychologically mastered; after that, the technology becomes less dangerous, the more potentially destructive it is. The book highlights pivotal phases of human history that have served as creative responses of culture to anthropogenic crises. The mechanisms of exacerbating and overcoming such crises are analyzed. Through the lens of historical experience, the crises of modern civilization and scenarios for further development are examined. The book will be useful for historians, psychologists, sociologists, political scientists, philosophers, as well as a wide range of interested readers.
