Boris Stepanovich Zhitkov (1882-1938), the author of numerous books for children, was an amazingly versatile person. He studied mathematics and chemistry at the Imperial Novorossiysk University, shipbuilding at the Imperial St. Petersburg Polytechnic Institute, led an ichthyological expedition to Yenisei, worked at Copenhagen and Nikolaev factories. He swam across the Black, Red and Mediterranean Seas. He visited Turkey, Greece, Italy, Bulgaria. Having passed the exterior exam for a long -range navigator, he went through three oceans - from Odessa to Vladivostok - on a cargo steamer. Boris Stepanovich saw a lot of interesting things before he became a writer. Zhitkov published his first story “over the sea” in the magazine “Sparrow "in 1924, when it was already forty -two. In addition, he knew how to do everything with his own hands: he was a carpenter, a mechanic, an electrician, and a fisherman. That is why he could talk about everything in the world. And he did this interesting and understandable for the little reader.
