The Anguttara Nikaya, or 'Numerical Discourses of the Buddha', is the fourth of the four major collections in the Pali Canon. It consists of 11 nipatas, or books, which in total contain almost ten thousand short suttas. However, a large portion of them are repetitions with minor variations, so the unique texts number around four thousand. The Anguttara Nikaya is based on a numerical scheme, where suttas containing a specific number of points are included in the book corresponding to that number. This aided in easier memorization and learning of the material in ancient times when literacy was just beginning to emerge, and all teachings were transmitted orally. In this edition, the Anguttara Nikaya is divided into four volumes. The second volume contains the Book of Fours and the Book of Fives. The suttas cover various aspects of Buddhist teachings.
