The book consists of three parts: the preface, the anecdotes themselves about Peter the Great and Comments. The preface is given a living, stylistically easy statement of the history of the anecdot genre, ascending to Byzantium. In the mid-1930s of the XIX century, Pushkin was completed by 9 volume volumes by I.I. Golikova "The story of Peter the Great, the wise converter of Russia". On the pages of the abstract Pushkin noted the anecdot about Peter Great. Jokes never went out with a separate edition.
