Andrei Gromyko worked in the Central Committee of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union for half a century, outlasting six general secretaries. The longest-serving Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Soviet state (1957-1985), he was respected both in his homeland and abroad. Although Western politicians and journalists called him the uncompromising "Mr. Nyet," they also claimed that Gromyko "possibly is the most informed foreign minister in the world." His opinion was valued by Winston Churchill and Charles de Gaulle... However, by the end of his life, already ousted from high politics, Andrei Andreevich admitted to his fatal mistake: in the pivotal year of 1985 for the USSR, it was at his suggestion that Mikhail Gorbachev was put forward as the General Secretary, with whom the collapse of the Soviet Union is associated in domestic history.
