The book, which tells about the early centuries of Russian statehood, contains historical and geographical essays dedicated to the history of the formation of the six oldest centers of Ancient Rus - Kiev, Chernigov, Pereyaslavl, which in the 11th century became the capitals of the first principalities, as well as Veliky Novgorod, Polotsk, and Smolensk. It shows the gradual process of forming the state territory of the principalities, how the subordination and inclusion in the system of princely tribute and courts of the lands inhabited by various tribes occurred, how the principalities interacted with each other, how their borders were formed and changed, how cities emerged, developed, and flourished, and what importance trade routes had for all of this. The authors of the book are leading domestic medievalists. The essay on the political and territorial core of Rus - the Kiev land, which was considered the common dynastic heritage of the ancient Russian princely family, belongs to Doctor of Historical Sciences, Academician of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine Petro Tolochko.
