How did death come about? Who created it and why? Who controls it and can it be overcome? And if so, how? And what is death in general - a senseless mistake of fate that can be corrected, or a punishment for human sins and guilt that cannot be redeemed in any way and never? All these questions tormented people from the very moment they realized themselves as humans. They blamed everyone for the appearance of death: divine creators who made humans not strong enough, evil forces that cunningly interfered with the creation process, the sun and the moon capriciously hindering immortality, all sorts of animals wishing to possess earthly and watery lands alone... Writer and historian Vladislav Petrov sifted through hundreds of myths from various peoples, from American Indians to Australian Aborigines, from indigenous peoples of the Far North to Bushmen in southern Africa. The result was a book dedicated, on the one hand, to the beliefs about death that existed at the dawn of human civilization, and on the other hand, to human nature itself, which seems to have not changed much since then.
