The manual describes the universal part of technical knowledge for any mechanical engineer, regardless of the specific type of activity at the enterprise (design, technological, or metrological), necessary for solving practical tasks to ensure the required quality of engineering products. Based on the analysis of the information model of the machine creation process, it is shown that the required quality of the machine is achieved by all engineering services of the mechanical engineering enterprise indirectly through the development and implementation of design forms, dimensional descriptions of parts, assemblies, and the product as a whole. Hence the need for unified rules for working with dimensional descriptions at all stages of the machine creation process (design, manufacturing, certification). The theoretical basis of this universal part consists of theories of dimensioning and dimension chains, based on which rules for constructing dimensional descriptions and their application to solve various tasks to ensure the required quality of the product are formulated. Examples of using these rules to solve such tasks in the design and production of widely used gear reducers are provided.
