1995. Sixteen-year-old Tessa Cartright was found barely alive in a blooming field of amber rudbeckias, in a mass grave where a serial killer hid the bodies of his victims. It was her testimony that helped put a man named Terrell Darcy Goodwin behind bars and sentenced to death.
2004. Just a month before Goodwin's sentence is to be carried out, unknown rudbeckias appear outside Tessa's window. Who could have done this? A copycat of Goodwin? Or perhaps, many years ago, a girl tormented by the horrors she endured, unable to think clearly, condemned an innocent man to death, and the real killer remained free?
The only person willing to help Tessa unravel what is happening is Goodwin's lawyer. Meanwhile, Tessa keeps receiving ominous "gifts" over and over again...
