In mid-August 1940, thousands of German aircraft carried out the first massive air raid on Great Britain, which remained the only opponent of the Reich after the defeat of France. However, even a month before that, Hitler had not given up hope of reaching an agreement with the British. This hope was fueled by the history of bilateral relations over the entire previous decade.
