It is used as a mild expectorant (especially in pediatric practice), anti-inflammatory agent for acute and chronic respiratory diseases, peptic ulcer disease, and duodenal ulcer. Marshmallow herb contains 35% mucus, starch, pectin, and minerals. The high content of mucilaginous substances allows marshmallow preparations to cover the mucous membranes of the body with a protective layer for a long time, protecting them from further damage, while facilitating the spontaneous regeneration of damaged tissues and reducing the inflammatory process. Marshmallow has expectorant, analgesic, and antitussive effects. Marshmallow leaf infusion for flu and pneumonia: To prepare it, pour one tablespoon of crushed dried marshmallow leaves with one cup of boiling water and infuse for one hour. Then strain the liquid, squeeze the raw material. Take the resulting infusion warm, a quarter of a cup three to four times a day in small sips. Marshmallow root, flower, or leaf infusion for gargling: To prepare it, pour two tablespoons of marshmallow root, flowers, or leaves with two cups of boiling water and infuse for two hours, then strain, squeeze the raw material. Use the resulting infusion for gargling, compresses, poultices, and enemas in inflammatory processes. Contraindications: The use of marshmallow root or herb preparations is contraindicated in the first months of pregnancy, as well as in cases of respiratory function disorders, chronic constipation, advanced thrombophlebitis, and varicose veins.
