The famous Russian traveler, geographer, ethnographer, writer, and explorer of the Far East, full member of the Imperial Russian Geographical Society, Vladimir Klavdievich Arsenyev (1872-1930) dedicated his entire life to Siberia. Arsenyev described the relief of Primorye and was the first to thoroughly explore the Sikhote-Alin mountain system, discovered unknown sources of the largest rivers in the region, and obtained the first information about their depths and flow regimes. He studied the animals, birds, fish, and plants of Primorye, proved that the Nanai, Udege, and Orochi peoples are descendants of the ancient and indigenous population of the Far East and Siberia, recorded oral stories about the life and beliefs of the indigenous peoples of Siberia. The result of his expeditions was rich in content works, written in a brilliant literary language, as well as the artistic books "Along the Ussuri Land" and "Dersu Uzala" (which have undergone numerous editions and have been translated into more than 30 languages). The film "Dersu Uzala," directed by Japanese filmmaker Akira Kurosawa, won an Oscar.
