The development of vertical takeoff and landing aircraft began in Germany during World War II, but over the past 80 years, only two models of this type of aircraft have been accepted into service - the domestic Yak-38 attack aircraft and the British Harrier fighter-bomber. The first Soviet vertical takeoff and landing aircraft, the Yak-Z6P, designed to protect aircraft carriers from airborne enemies, took to the sky in 1964. The Yak-38, which followed it, was based on four heavy aircraft carriers and was the most mass-produced domestic combat aircraft with vertical takeoff and landing capabilities (a total of 231 machines of three modifications were produced). Unfortunately, the pinnacle of Soviet developments in this field - the multi-purpose Yak-141 fighter, which surpassed not only its predecessors but also the NATO Harrier, remained an experimental machine and turned into a museum exhibit. Even the state-of-the-art F-35B can only be conditionally called an analogue of the Yak-141, as vertical takeoff of the American fifth-generation fighter-bomber is possible only with minimal weight and without weapons.
In the new book by a well-known aviation historian, based in part on archival materials, all domestic vertical takeoff and landing aircraft are examined - a wide range of these aircraft developed in the USSR. From unrealized projects and experimental machines (for example, the vertically taking off amphibian VVA-14) to the Yak-38 and Yak-141. The edition is illustrated with numerous photographs.
