Aleksei Mikhailovich Gan (1893–1942) was one of the creators of Russian Constructivism in the 1920s, the originator of an original theoretical model of Constructivism as socially oriented "intellectual production," a master of Constructivist typography, a director of newsreel films, and the author of the theory of "mass action" in the performing arts. He published and designed the magazine "Kinofot," designed kiosks and movie posters, participated in the creation of the Constructivist Group, the Association of Contemporary Architects, and the association "October."
This book is the first Russian-language monograph about Aleksei Gan. Alexander Lavrentiev, an art historian, design historian, professor at the Stroganov Moscow State University of Arts and Industry, popularizer of the heritage of the Russian avant-garde, grandson of Alexander Rodchenko and Varvara Stepanova, has compiled a portrait of his hero from manifestos, memories of contemporaries, friends, and colleagues, as well as research and critical works on Gan's preserved or reconstructed creative legacy.
