The circumstances forced Alexander II to become a reformer. A contradictory and ambiguous figure in both personal relationships and governing style, he demonstrated enough political will to address the main issue of the 19th century - the abolition of serfdom. Thanks to Alexander II, the date of February 19, 1861, became one of the key dates in our history, and the emperor himself earned the unofficial title of the Liberator. The implementation of the Great Reforms provided an impetus to foreign policy achievements: territories in Central Asia, the Caucasus, and the Far East were annexed to the Russian Empire, strengthening the country's international authority and providing assistance to the South Slavic peoples in their struggle for independence from the Ottoman Empire. The book by the candidate of historical sciences L.M. Lyashenko is supplemented with excerpts from the diaries of the lady-in-waiting of the imperial court A.F. Tyutcheva, memoirs of the Minister of War D.A. Milyutin, as well as a lecture by the historian V.O. Klyuchevsky. The project "Collectors of the Russian Land" is being implemented by the Russian Military-Historical Society with the support of the "United Russia" party.
