Alexander II (1818-1881), the emperor, spouse and father of adult children, was 28 years older than Princess Ekaterina Mikhailovna Dolgoruka. Their novel lasted many years, and in 1880 the widowed emperor entered into a morganatic marriage, legitimizing their common children and commanding to call his beloved Katya the brightest princess Yuryevskaya. However, in less than a year, in the spring of 1881, Alexander II died at the hands of terrorists.
At the funeral of the Liberator, the young French diplomat Mauris Paleologist was present - his essay, Alexander II and Ekaterina Yuryevskaya "opens this book. And then it was published in it - for the first time in Russian - the memoirs of the princess herself, published by her in Europe immediately after the death of her husband, under the pseudonym of Viktor Laphate. The book also contains a rare illustrative material of 1881.
