The fate of Emperor Alexander I is full of contradictory events and fateful twists. He was a glorious victor over Napoleon, but an indecisive reformer, a skilled and cunning diplomat, yet a deeply wounded and troubled individual, described as a "weak and cunning ruler," but also as a "sphinx, not deciphered until the grave." Dmitry Merezhkovsky's novel "Alexander I" tells the story of the emperor's last months in power, the formation of secret societies, and the preparation for the future Decembrist uprising. Against the backdrop of dramatic events in the country's history, the reader is presented with images of the emperor himself and his entourage: his spouse, close associates, and courtiers.
Dmitry Merezhkovsky's work is accompanied by the publication of memoirs by the lady-in-waiting of the imperial court, Sofia Shuazel-Gufie, as well as selected excerpts from the extensive work of historian N.K. Shilder.
