This icon is one of the most revered miraculous icons of the Mother of God in Russia, having a whole series of significantly different iconographic variants. According to legend, the first miracle from the icon called 'Joy of All Who Sorrow' occurred in 1688. The native sister of Patriarch Joachim, Euphemia, who lived in Moscow, suffered from an incurable disease for a long time. One morning during prayer, she heard a voice: 'Euphemia! Go to the Transfiguration Church of My Son, there is an icon called 'Joy of All Who Sorrow'. Let the priest perform a moleben with the blessing of water, and you will be healed from the disease.' Euphemia fulfilled the command of the Most Holy Mother of God and was healed. This happened on October 24 (November 6 in the new style) 1688. In memory of this, the celebration of the icon was established, and the church received the name of the miraculous image. The Mother of God in this icon is depicted in full growth, in royal attire and with a crown on her head. In front of Her are suffering people, suffering from various ailments and life sorrows. Inscriptions testify to their sufferings, words from the prayer to the Mother of God: 'You are the helper of the oppressed, the hope of the hopeless, the protector of the poor, the comfort of the sorrowful, the provider for the hungry, the clothing of the naked, the healing of the sick, the salvation of sinners, the help and protection of all Christians.' Angels are depicted near the people, pointing them to the Mother of God. There are many different types of the icon 'Joy of All Who Sorrow', where the Mother of God is depicted crowned, in royal attire. Sometimes She holds the Infant Jesus in her arms. In the 'with coins' icon, the Mother of God appears in her usual earthly clothes, with a white veil on her head. People pray before the icon of the Mother of God 'Joy of All Who Sorrow' in despair, sorrow, seeking comfort and protection, as well as in incurable diseases. The Mother of God 'Joy of All Who Sorrow' is the Patroness of orphans and the poor, the oppressed, the downtrodden, and the suffering.
