Two works by Henry James (1843-1916), included in this book, give an idea of different sides of his work. James is a child of two cultures, American and English. "Washington Square" is clearly his British hypostasis. It is not for nothing that she is compared with the novels by Jane Austin - a tasteless family story written simply and elegant. James himself put this novel with his novel, but the readers were delighted with him. "" Washington Square "everyone loves, even opponents of Henry James, ”wrote critic Donald Hall. But the "rotation of the screw" is "delicious American spit in a cup of English tea" (Nikita Eliseev): Gothic history with ghosts, mystical mystery, corruption of minor and ambiguous finals. Then James was quite pleased with himself - he offered a reading (bored) public a "terrible story", but at the same time slightly mocked her, giving free rein to his branded irony. The entire opera conventionality of the plot was excellently felt by the English composer Benjamin Britten - he finally translated the "turn of the screw" into world cultural classics.
