Lucy Snow is a young orphan who has neither money nor relatives. However, she has an excellent education, a solid character and a fairly adventurous mindset to go alone to the continent and find the advantageous place of the English teacher in a respectable boarding house for young girls.
It is there, among the hard everyday labor and small female intrigues, fate reduces it with two very different men - the Englishman John and the Belgian field. The first seems to be a true example of a calm British charm, the second is gloomy, harsh and uneven. The first causes Lucy warm sympathy, the second - a whole storm of conflicting feelings.
