"Vanity Fair" is the pinnacle of William Tekkere"s work. The future talented writer was born in 1811. The satirist talent woke up early in it. Already in his student years, in Cambridge, he published the magazine "Snob". At that time, they called the apprentices of the shoemakers, and at the same time this word was a nickname for ignorant pride bourgeois. With the light hand of Tekkerey, the term "snobbery" was widespread. In his famous novel, he mocked the vanity of the vanity of the bourgeoisie.
Having reached the age of majority, Thackeraey received an inheritance, tried to finance the publication of a couple of newspapers, but suffered a fiasco and practically ruined. I had to do journalism, which at that time in England was on the rise. As a result, Thackeraei met with various sides of English society, in which capitalism gaining strength faced patriarchal moral principles. Thackerasey wrote many essays and articles that have become a kind of material to the novel. At this time, the writer, printing in the satirical magazine "Punch" peculiar caricature sketches for higher English society, earned a reputation as a poisonous mockery. The ironic laughter was his element, in which he felt completely free.
It is curious that Thackeray himself illustrated his articles and essays. Even in his youth, he dreamed of becoming an artist and even studied drawing in Paris. He did not become a large painter, finding his calling as an artist-cartoonist. Tekkeraei-artist depicts his heroes in caricature, which gives the "fair of vanity" a special charm. This novel brought the writer wide fame. It was published in 1847-1848. In the form of monthly issues, and then was published in 1848 in the form of a three -volume. Reading the name of the novel, the enlightened English audience recalled the popular allegorical composition of the 17th century. John Benyan "Path of the pilgrim , in which London was portrayed as a fair of everyday fuss, where everything was put up for sale - from jewelry and houses, to ranks and human souls. After the success of the "Fair", Thamikei wrote several more novels, gave lectures in Europe and America and died in 1863 from a stroke.
In realistic techniques of Tekkeraei, it is similar to Dickens. His "fair" is a satire on eternal human vices. The main character of the novel is the poor girl Bekka Sharp, who decided to get a job in life at all costs. This type is often found in the modern world. For the first time in Russian, the "Fair" was published in 1850. In this edition, the text was given in the excellent translation of V. I. Stein.
