The novel, first published in 1866 and Hugo himself, perceived as the final part of the trilogy about the struggle of a person with the forces of superstitions opposing him ("Cathedral of the Parisian Mother of God"), social injustice ("censorship") and, of course, destructive natural elements (respectively, " Truds of the sea "), is one of the most exciting works of the great writer, which is now being read with an unhappy interest.
The old Loerer"s old shipowner threatens the ruin - a thieving captain, trying to hide his crimes, drove his ship" Duranda to reefs. The beauty Deryushett, the niece of Lightie, in despair promises to marry someone who will save at least a steam car of the ship. And then a young fisherman secretly in love with her goes into a dangerous expedition, not yet knowing that he will have to grab there with a nightmare much worse than rocks and storms
