The name of John Buckin (1875-1940) is practically not known to the Ukrainian reader, and he was not only a first-class writer, one of the founders of the “spy” novel, but also an employee of British intelligence, and later a prominent politician, whose career ended as a general as a general -Canadian Governor. His first novel “Thirty -Nine steps”, which had a noisy success, was published in 1915, at the height of the First World War. For the first time, the charming image of Richard Hannaeus, a hero who later wandered along the pages of the novels of the Bacon, is appeared in it, and the plot is associated with the activities of the German secret agents group in England and Scotland.
In 1935, the Thirty -Nine steps were first filmed by the great Alfred Hitchcock, and in 2008, director James Hawz removed the modern rime of this dramatic story
