The famous book of Charles de Costera "The Legend of Ulenspiegel", which saw the light in December 1867, not only glorified Belgian literature, but also became an outstanding phenomenon of all world literature, in the context of which this work stands next to such great books as “Don Quixote” Cervantes and "Gargantua and Pantagruel" Rabelais. Roman Charles de Koster, telling about the adventures of Til Ulenspigel and his friend of the fat man and glutton of Lamma Guzak, is saturated with the spirit of freedom. Til Ulenspiegel, a joker and witty mockery, from whom the arrogant nobles, and monks and kings, becomes a fighter, a brave Geesa, embodied in himself the national spirit of Flanders. Til is a folk hero who is never dying and not aging. He is a diverse: he is a soldier or a peasant, then a painter in the Landgraph Palace, then a jester at the court of the king, but everywhere he remains a rebel, a fighter for the happiness of his people
