Tomazo Gartzoni is an Italian writer of the late 16th century, whom few people know, even in Italian manuals on the history of literature, he is mentioned by one line as the author between mannerism and Baroque. His book “The Hospital of Unsibly obsessed”, published in 1586, is something between the “praise of stupidity” of Erasmus and Berton’s anatomy: more baroque than the first, and less scientist than the second.
Garzoni begins to describe all types of insanity, and he understands it very widely: there is also insanity in a completely medical sense, and sections like “Mad people lazy and negligent”, “obsessed rustic and short -sighted”, “obsessed wine deeds”, “obsessed On love ”, etc., hardly the reader does not recognize himself in at least one of the types. Each chapter Garnzoni begins with venerable ancient examples, but quickly goes to the madmen, melancholys and simpletons of native Italy: this is an enchanting placer of jokes, colorful and very ridiculous in places. For specialists and a wide reader audience.
The publication was prepared by the Medievist Roman Lvovich Shmarakov, Doctor of Philological Sciences, Associate Professor of the Department of Philology of the Higher School of Economics (St. Petersburg Campus)
