Anatol France (1844-1924) wrote a novel about the French Revolution in 1912, between two Russian revolutions. And as if opening the door to a very close future, from where it was immediately pulled by smoke, gray and cadaveric stench. What with the fact that they are French, we know them very well. Here is Marat: “He looked around with yellow eyes piercing through and through, as if in this enthusiasm the crowd was looking for enemies of the people who were to be exposed, traitors who were to punish.” Here is Robespierre: "He spoke for a long time, flowering and smoothly. The twisted in the celestial areas of philosophy, he struck the lightning of the conspirators who were suppressing on the ground. Here is the main character of the novel, the artist Gamlen, a kind, noble man. Having become a member of the tribunal, he ruthlessly sends even close and familiar people to the guillotine. “He is virtuous - he will be terrible,” many tragic fates are read in this visionary aphorism of France. According to the beliefs, Anatole France was a socialist, he participated in rallies and, one might say, brought the triumph of left -wing ideas. He probably felt a certain personal responsibility for this, since he donated money from his Nobel Prize in 1921 to the starving Russia.
