The novel of the French writer Verkor "Silence of the Sea" stands among the great books of the 20th century. In 1942, he was secretly published in Paris occupied by the Germans and became one of the symbols of resistance.
The plot of the book, it would seem, is uncomplicated, but behind the external outline of events hides an amazing depth of understanding of life. Silence becomes for the heroes, Andre and his niece Jeanne, a way of resisting the Nazis and fundamentally changes the German officer who settled in their house.
The novel was three times filmed (in 1949, 1954, 2004) and formed the basis of many theatrical productions. It is included in the list of the hundred best books of the century, compiled by the newspaper "Le Monde".
