The action of the "shuanov" takes place at the end of 1799. These were the last months of the reign of the so -called directory and the first weeks of the consulate, headed by Napoleon Bonaparte. The power in the country was in the hands of a large bourgeoisie, which took advantage of the victory of the bourgeois revolution in France in its interests.
The novel is based on one of the episodes of the struggle of the republican troops with the Shuans, at the head of which were nobles-Royalists and Catholic priests.
