Pyadar O"Fleri (1839-1920) - Catholic priest, translator, patriarch of Irish literary modernism and, in general, one of the founders of modern prose in Irish. The fairy -tale novel "Shenna" - the story of the Irish Faust from the common people - was the first work of a large form in live spoken Irish, this is a real literary monument. Before you is 120-year-old casuistic novel of ideas about karmic retribution in the Abrahamic world with its Manichaean dichotomy and strict bipolarity. But it is not read as a moralizing novel, but rather as moral -descriptive. "Shenna" is primarily a comedy of manners, and only then a literary fairy tale with unexpected installation gluing of the narrative, invested plots and other gifts of Protomoternism.
"Shenna" became the first literary work of a large form in live spoken Irish, this is a real literary monument. The narrative simultaneously develops in two genres and on two plans. At the beginning of the twentieth century. An elderly woman tells the girls a fairy tale about the shoemaker who sold the soul to the devil. This framework history is presented in the form of a play. The internal narrative is the fairy tale: the shoemaker Shenna received a wallet from a black man with devilish money in exchange for going to hell after 13 years. The transaction can be canceled only if the devil himself violates it. A woman-angel fights for the soul of Shenna. The shoemaker has no right to tell anyone about what happened to him. This part is written in prose and occurs in the abstract "alternative-failed" Ireland.
Shenna for many years determined the peculiar unwritten canon of modernist fantastic stories, is constantly reprinted in Ireland in the form of abbreviated retells for children and several times came out completely, including audio format.
This book not only gives us real Ireland, its fairy tale and its ancient time, but also returns us to the untimely childhood of non -child’s fairy tales about the most important thing - that it is indistinguishable in life, about the magic of great decisions and hope.

No matter what they say about “Shenna”, [this novel] became the sun or cloud over all Irish literature - both in the first generation of the Irish Renaissance, and for a long time after it. Even if, besides this merit, Shenna had no others, it is necessary to listen to his voice.
