“Shagren leather” is another novel from the “Scenes of the Life of Paris” of the Great Cycle “Human Comedy”, written by O. de Balzac in 1830-1831. The author draws a picture of the life of a simple person, whose fate is intertwined with the ancient mystical talisman of the mysterious East. Illustrations for the novel were created by the French artist of the XIX century. Charles Ward. His work emphasizes the social orientation of the work. With the light hand of Balzac, the expression “shagren skin” became winged. So you can call any important resource that quickly and irreversibly melts. For example, it can be time, opportunities or finances. The shagry is called a well -made soft goat or sheep"s skin with a characteristic rough surface. In Balzac’s novel “Shagren Leather”, a piece of such shagwinkle plays the role of a mystical and powerful talisman, which the protagonist Rafael de Valenten acquires in an antique shop. The young man is ready to take his own life from chronic lack of money, but the talisman saves the unfortunate, because this skin is able to fulfill any desires of its owner. This is evidenced by the mysterious inscription located on it, which, according to the antique dealer, is made in Sanskrit. However, you have to pay for every dream realized. The skin, symbolizing the life of its owner, is inevitably compressed each time. In a large -scale cycle, the Human Comedy, which Balzac began to write by stepping over the thirty -year line, the novel “Shagrene Leather” is assigned to “Philosophical Studies”. The unusual mystical plot of the novel allowed the writer to reflect on the underlying desires of people, and about the price, which often has to pay for their implementation. Lyubov, that in the first edition of the novel, published in 1831, Balzac cited the content of magical inscription only in French. She looked like a triangle, starting with a line I possessing me, you will possess everything .... There were 45 words and 237 letters in the inscription. The “original” inscription appeared only in the publication of 1838, but it was made not in Sanskrit, but in Arabic. The prominent Austrian orientalist Baron Joseph von Hammer-Purgstal helped to translate the magic text invented by Balzac. In his record, a blossom was made, which the set -pounds took for the letter. In another fluent word, they put another instead of the original letter, outwardly with it, losing the meaning of the phrase. As a result, in the 1839 publication, the Arab text was reproduced with two errors. In later publications of the novel, including in his translations into Russian and English, in the magical formula in Arabic inaccuracies only grew, and only in this publication it was reproduced absolutely correctly - according to the original record of Hammer
