“Kerry’s sister” is the first novel by Theodore Dreiser, released at the turn of the century in 1900. For world literature, this novel has become one of the symbols of American realism: with genuine plausibility, Dreizer draws a picture of a provincial actress looking for happiness in a big city ...
As the author himself will say later, in Kerry’s sister and in the next, no less realistic novel, Jenny Gerhardt, he used the events of his sisters. Criticism at the beginning of the 20th century adopted the first works of Dreiser coolly, even hostile. Although the fact that both books are not only belonging to the future author of the “American tragedy” and the “financier”, but are still interesting to the reader, only confirms the biases and shortsightedness of those reactionary assessments
