The book of travel essays “Rome, Naples and Florence” is little like a familiar guide. “Baron de Stendhal, a cavalry officer,” whose name was on the cover of the first edition (1817), did not care too much to provide his readers with detailed instructions: what paths should walk and what attractions to admire under the sky of blessed Italy.
However, something else was present in his book - Italians, people, about whom in most cases the authors of countless guides and travel essays were silent. With the skill of a magnificent novelist (at that time, however, not revealed to the world) in a hundred fascinating jokes, somewhere and somewhere you meet the names of the classics, Stendhal creates a voluminous and live portrait of Italian society. And the observation of local morals is to better understand the author for the author than this beloved country lives, which gives its famous composers the ability to create such excellent music, singers - the ability to perform their arias with such a feeling, and artists to amaze the world with works conquering the public for many centuries
