The book includes two works of Ivlin in - an outstanding British writer, novelist, journalist, essay, biographer, critic, one of the finest stylists in English prose of the twentieth century. In the novel “Return to Braidshead” (1945), on behalf of the successful artist Charles Ryder, the history of the life of the aristocratic family of the marchmain, with whom the narrator’s youth was closely connected and in whose birth estate he had a chance to return by the will of chance. A recognized master of black humor and a sarcastic, witty satire, Ivlin in wrote an unexpectedly lyrical, nostalgic and confessional book, endowing the protagonist by many autobiographical features: memories of a cheerful time for studying in Oxford, passion for drawing, love for ancient architecture and patriarchal way of the English fiber contempt for the impudence and self -propelled vulgarity of the nouveau riche, a complex conflict between personal feeling and Catholic beliefs. The story “Unbatient” (1947) - a tragicomedy full of murderous sarcasm from the life of the California funeral bureau - became, like the novel preceding it, the literary event of the year on both sides of the ocean
