Marie-Henri Bayil, known to the whole world under the pseudonym Stendhal, is one of the most famous French writers and the founder of the psychological novel. The current publication included two main works of Stendhal, which provided him with an honorable place in the pantheon of classics of European literature.
The novel Red and Black tells of the ambitious and talented young man, a native of the lower classes. Among the many assumptions about the meaning of the name there is a version according to which Stendhal disguised in him two feelings raging in the soul of the protagonist, Julien Sorel.
