It is published in a new translation by Leonid Berschid.
For the first time, copyright drafts are included in the text of the novel, the publication is also supplemented by unique reproductions of the manuscript pages of the “process”.
A stunning philosophical novel, written more than a century ago and has already become a classic of world literature, but absolutely modern, helps to see modern realities without embellishment and draw conclusions about how harmful there may be inaction.
A novel about the last year of the life of Joseph K., stuck in the millstones of a dumb and ruthless judicial machine, is an unpleasant portrait of the bureaucracy, familiar to readers of the 21st century, no worse than contemporaries of Franz Kafka, and a metaphor of monotonous human life without joy, love and meaning . The banking manager K. is judged, but it is not clear why. The hero is not able to achieve justice, does not distinguish manipulation from mental warmth, and conscientiousness - from the arbitrariness of officials and to the last breath takes his absurd state for granted. The new translation of the “process”, made by Leonid Burshid, is supplemented by fragments of drafts of Franz Kafka, previously not published as part of the novel. He re -builds the chronology of the misfortunes of K. and masterfully conveys the intonation of the original text: Non -hot, sometimes too formal, slightly shy German brilliant Prague Jew.
Quotes
What kind of people are this? What are they talking about at all? What institution do they serve? In the end, K. lives in a legal state in peacetime, the law is the law and who dared to attack him in his own house?
He always tried not to take anything too seriously, to believe in the worst only if it really becomes bad, and not to worry about the future, no matter how it threatens him. But now this approach seemed wrong to him.
Franz Kafka
The publication of the “process” in the new translation is supplemented by drafts, thrown out by the arbitrariness of Kafka Max Brod, as well as fragments that the author himself crossed out. The publication of one of the most important novels of world literature of the 20th century in this form allows you to more deeply reveal the author’s plan and better understand this multifaceted, ambiguous, but relevant work to this day. For the first time published in 1925, 10 years after writing and a year after Kafka’s death, the “process” was created when radical changes occurred in the writer’s life, and the bloody First World War was waiting for Europe, which broke the fate of the continent.
We reprint the novel in the hope that acquaintance with him will warn a new generation of readers against thoughtless acceptance of reality, which may literally be life -threatening
