The series "masters of book illustrations" is designed to introduce readers to the work of the most famous world illustrator artists. The next issue is devoted to Alexander Liezen-Mayer, 1839-1898)-the German portraitist and historical painter of Hungarian descent, performing a number of magnificent illustrations for the works of Shakespeare, Schiller and other writers. In turn, the illustrations to the "Faust" of Johann Wolfgang Goethe became the first successful and masterfully completed work to create images for a great work. Goethe"s immortal creation about the adventures of Dr. Faust, who laid his soul to Mephistopheles in exchange for the secrets of the universe, always worried the reader’s imagination.
