Anatol France, a member of the French Academy and the Nobel laureate, was one of the first to introduce thoughts into the novel. It is the thought that appreciates above all the hero Abbot Jerome Kuanyar, a librarian and a scientist, as if leaving from the paintings of Flemish masters: well -worn, with traces of a frequent rod of a sutan, a glasses broken in a boar fight, a torn hat. The plot in the novel is not the main thing, the narrative is built as a series of dialogs in which Voltaire"s philosophical stories are noticeable. Having taken to teach Jacques Tournebrash, the son of a seller of meat, Latin and Greek, Abbot Kuanyar speaks with him about the surrounding life, about ancient mythology and history - and brings the art of dialogue to the element of a grotesque
