John Apdike (1932-2009) is one of the most significant American writers of the second half of the 20th century, prose writer, poet and literary critic, author of 23 novels and 45 other books: collections of stories, poems, critical articles about literature, painting, books for children. Laureate of many literary awards, including two Pulitzer prizes (for the novels "Rabbit rich" and "Rabbit calmed down").
John Apdayka Roman "Kentavar" saw the light in 1963, when John Updike was 32 years old, and a year later he was awarded the highest in the United States of the Literary Award - the National Book Prize. The author himself said about the novel that in it the ancient Greek myths are intertwined with the reality of a small town of Pennsylvania in 1947.
In the characters of the book, you can find prototypes from among the inhabitants of Olympus. In the main character, the school teacher of natural science, George Koldwell, is guessed by the centience of Hiron, the son of Kronos, originally endowed with immortality, and in his son Peter - Prometheus, who, according to legend, Hiron gives his immortality. And, perhaps, Apdike himself, a teenager from the same places and the same times.

Some have abilities, others have no. But everyone has something, even sometimes only life. The merciful God did not create us so that we would regret what we do not have. A person with two talents should not envy a person with five. Look at us with Peter. I have not a single talent, but he has ten. But I am not in a claim against him. I love him. He is my son.
