Walter Scott is a poet, a prose writer and translator of the beginning of the 19th century, who became the ancestor of the genre "Historical Roman". His "Aivengo" is one of the first similar works. The novel was published in 1819 and became the classic of adventure literature of the XIX century. Sales of Aivengo "were phenomenal for that time: the first circulation of 10 thousand copies was sold in less than two weeks. The success of Aivengo "aroused a romantic interest in the history of the Middle Ages. This is the first novel in which Scott turns to a purely English topic, describing the enmity between the Anglo -Saxons and the Normans during the reign of Richard I. The novel describes how King Richard, who did not return from the Crusade, nicknamed the lion"s heart, is captured by the Duke of Austrian, and his brother King Prince John is trying to capture the throne at this time. The young knight Aivengo returns from the campaign home and fights for his honor and love to the beautiful Lady Ravena. One of the heroes of the novel is the legendary Robin Hood.
