In the recent history of Ireland there were many people who carefully collected the folklore of their homeland. The famous popularizer of her ancient myths was James Stevens. His like -minded person was the writer and playwright Shaimas Mcmanus. He was born at the very end of 1867 in the north of Ireland in the family of a merchant who lived in a small village of Tantalon. Shemas began to record fairy tales, a head teacher. He listened more than once how Shanghai pronounced them - as professional storytellers were called in Ireland. They handed each other sagas, legends and fairy tales from mouth to mouth, without recording them. Mcmanus, however, perfectly understood that this national treasure must be recorded on paper. Love for Irish folklore and literature helped Sheimas to equip personal life. His first wife in 1901 was the Irish poet Etna Karberi. Unfortunately, the disease broke her life early. Perhaps that is why Mcmanus soon decided to start a new life. He crossed the Atlantic and began to publish the tales he collected in American magazines. In the same place, in the USA, in 1921 his Popular History of Ireland came out. The writer lived a very long life, stepping over the ninety -year line and leaving behind the collections of the fairy tales of his homeland.

Tales in this book are illustrated by drawings by the American artist Frank Verbeck. In his homeland, in Ohio, and beyond his borders he gained the glory of a talented animalist. Frank was born in the middle of the XIX century. His father was a simple shoemaker who masterfully possessed a knife and a drape. Perhaps that is why Frank first became a cutter. Especially the figures of animals were able to. He began to draw them, and soon funny images of animals and birds began to appear from under his pen, which with their facial expressions, poses, body movements, and sometimes muzzles surprisingly resembled people. Following his talent, Verbek moved to New York, where he received an art education. His drawings began to regularly appear on the pages of various American magazines. The greatest pleasure Frank was given work on projects with a cheerful fairy -tale plot that was associated with animals. He illustrated the “Golf Handbook for Bears”, one of the Baum’s books from the series about the magic country of Oz, some Harris"s tales about uncle Rimus, “Tales of animals at night” and many more similar publications. In this series are the Irish tales illustrated by him, collected by Sheimas Mcmanus
