The Green Face (1916) is the second novel of the Austrian author, released a year after the famous Golem and even exceeded even unprecedentedly huge circulations of his predecessor. Being a virtuoso alchemical variation on the theme of the “eternal wanderer "Agasfer, the Green Face combines in its masterfully built structure such seemingly incompatible aspects of Western and Eastern esotericism, such as Kabbalah, Yoga and hermetic tradition. Clearly expressed Gnostic motifs are closely intertwined with dark African cults (vudism), and the apocalyptic picture of the death of the Dutch capital presented in the final of the novel looks like a sentence of a modern hopelessly desalized civilization
