The subsequent work on the work lasted about ten years and demanded from the writer a huge dedication and hard work. In an effort to penetrate the very spirit of the era, Mitchell painstakingly studied the history of his native Atlanta, used newspapers and magazines of the mid -19th century. On the pages of her manuscripts, the stories of eyewitnesses of the Civil War and family traditions came to life. Mitchell copied some scenes four to five times, and as for the first chapter, the writer satisfied only the 60th option!
