This novel of the English writer Anthony Trollop (1815-1882) is included in the Barcel Chronicles cycle and its main storyline is now relevant. Life on credit, unfortunately familiar to the modern Russian person, in the second half of the 19th century brought many to the last line. The protagonist Mark Robarts, formed by a gentleman with a modest salary,, by his gullibility, falls into the clutches of creditors, and his sister Lucy falls in love without memory into a young handsome man. How will the heroes be able to maintain dignity and not change their feelings, being on the verge of the collapse of all hopes?
